Can Indoor WPC Flooring Be Installed Over Existing Tile?

Learn when indoor WPC flooring may go over existing tile, with checks for tile stability, moisture, surface preparation, floor height and product approval.

Indoor WPC flooring may be installed over an existing tiled floor if the flooring manufacturer permits that build-up and the tile base meets its requirements. This advice concerns indoor rigid-core flooring, not outdoor wood-plastic decking. Keeping the tiles does not remove the need for preparation.

Confirm what is beneath the new floor

Inspect the existing tiles and their bond to the substrate. Loose pieces, moving cracks or damaged areas require investigation before another layer is installed. Identify the substrate and any moisture-control system beneath it instead of assuming the tiles act as a complete moisture barrier. A sound-looking surface can still conceal moisture or movement that affects the proposed installation.

Assess joints and surface condition

Review grout lines, height differences between tiles and the overall condition of the floor. Ask the installer to measure against the new flooring’s published requirements. The approved preparation method may involve filling joints or using a compatible smoothing system. A rigid plank should not be treated as a substitute for a stable, suitably prepared base. Follow the preparation material supplier’s curing instructions before covering it.

Check height and underlay compatibility

Adding flooring changes the height at doors, stairs and transitions. Consider access to appliances, cabinet plinths and service points as well. Confirm whether the product has an attached pad and whether any additional underlay is allowed. More cushioning is not automatically better; the proposed layers need approval as a system. Review the movement allowances and finishing details required by the manufacturer.

Decide whether retaining tile is worthwhile

Obtain a preparation plan and compare it with removing the existing covering. Include the condition of the tile base, access restrictions and the desired finished height in the decision. Do not begin installation while unresolved cracks, dampness or loose tiles remain. Keep photographs, measurements and the manufacturer’s approval with the job record. If underfloor heating is present, check compatibility of the complete build-up rather than considering only the new flooring.
