How LVT Flooring Is Made: Materials, Forming and Finishing

Explore how LVT flooring is made, from PVC compound preparation and sheet forming to lamination, cooling and finishing, with equipment scope clearly defined.

LVT flooring is made by preparing a PVC-based compound, forming a sheet or substrate, combining the specified layers, and controlling cooling and dimensions before finishing. This guide describes an extrusion-based route. The exact sequence depends on the floor construction and installed equipment; a substrate extrusion line does not automatically include every machine required for a retail-ready tile or plank.

Define the flooring structure before choosing machinery

Start with a sample and a written layer specification. Identify the substrate, decorative film, wear layer and any balance layer or backing. Their roles differ: the decoration supplies the visual design, while the wear layer and surface treatment affect how the exposed face performs. Material selection and finished-product testing determine those properties; the equipment name alone cannot establish them.

PVC resin, mineral filler and formulation-specific additives must be prepared consistently. Flexible LVT formulations may contain plasticizers, but recipes should be confirmed for the intended construction. Record raw-material batches and approved formulation revisions so a later defect can be traced to a particular production run.

Form the sheet and combine the layers

In an extrusion-based route, the extruder plasticizes the prepared compound and supplies the sheet-forming section. The die and roller arrangement establish the substrate geometry. Layer bonding must match the materials and the approved line layout; decorative and wear films may be introduced during forming where the equipment supports that route.

Film alignment, substrate consistency and bonding quality should be checked together. Wrinkles, trapped air or visible layer movement are observations to investigate, rather than reasons to copy another factory’s settings. Separate pressing or conditioning equipment may be used in other LVT manufacturing routes, so buyers should confirm which stages are included in the proposal.

Control cooling, handling and downstream finishing

The formed sheet needs controlled cooling and stable handling before cutting. Uneven cooling or excessive handling stress can affect flatness and later dimensional stability. Compare samples after the agreed conditioning period as well as immediately at the cutter; a satisfactory fresh sheet does not prove long-term conformity.

Finished flooring may need surface coating, trimming, profiling, backing application or packaging outside the extrusion section. Specify these operations separately when required. A click-floor project also needs a defined joint design and appropriate profile inspection, rather than treating all cut sheet as finished click flooring.

Confirm the complete production boundary

Ask the supplier to map each proposed machine to its input and output, and identify any work performed offline. Include the sample, layer structure, dimensions, surface requirements and acceptance tests in the discussion. Jiahao’s LVT flooring production line page outlines its extrusion route; confirm the final equipment scope against your own finished-floor specification.
