The most reliable way to assess SPC flooring is to compare the supplied product with its specification and supporting evidence. Colour, smell and improvised bending tests cannot establish raw-material purity, emissions compliance or long-term performance. Use a documented sample review instead.

Start with traceable documents

Request the product code, declared construction, nominal dimensions, installation manual and warranty. Ask whether stated thickness includes any attached pad and how tolerances are defined. Reports should identify the tested product and the relevant method. Check that the supplier can connect the delivered batch to the specification you approved. A general brochure is less useful than documentation for the exact collection.

Inspect samples without inventing pass criteria

View several pieces for visible surface defects, chipped edges and inconsistent dimensions. Assemble sample joints according to the manual and note alignment, ease of engagement and any damage. Measure dimensions with appropriate tools, then compare with the supplier’s stated tolerances. There is no universal rule that a floor must measure a fixed amount thicker than its label to be genuine.

Ask targeted performance questions

For the intended room, request the relevant evidence for wear, indentation, dimensional stability, slip behaviour and emissions. Fire requirements may also apply to the project. Do not equate a dark core with poor quality or a pale core with safe chemistry. Recycled content and colour alone do not answer these questions, and a lack of noticeable odour is not an emissions test.

Define acceptance before placing the order

Agree what sample, specification and batch checks will form the acceptance basis. For a substantial purchase, consider independent testing using methods relevant to the destination market. Retain approved samples and record any discrepancy with photographs and measurements. Avoid damaging saleable boards through arbitrary lock-breaking or layer-peeling demonstrations. If a problem is found, ask for a technical explanation and a replacement plan before installation. This approach turns a subjective impression into a procurement record.
