LVT means luxury vinyl tile, a decorative resilient flooring category commonly offered as tiles or planks. It can reproduce wood, stone and other designs. The term is sometimes used broadly in retail descriptions, so ask whether a proposed product is flexible vinyl or a rigid-core construction.

Understand the available formats

Tile-shaped products can suit stone-inspired layouts, while planks often carry wood designs. Patterned formats may require a specific laying sequence. Sheet vinyl is supplied in rolls and should be identified separately from tile or plank products. The format affects seams, handling and layout, but it does not alone determine durability or suitability for a room.

Ask how the product is constructed

A decorative image, protective surface and supporting layers contribute different functions. Actual layer counts, thicknesses and backing materials vary. Request the technical description for the selected collection rather than treating a generic diagram as its specification. Ask which thickness is declared and whether any attached pad is included. A convincing wood print does not mean the product contains wood or shares timber’s maintenance requirements.

Check the installation method

Flexible LVT may be bonded or installed using another system approved by its manufacturer. Other products marketed under broad vinyl terms may have click joints and rigid cores. Identify the exact system before estimating preparation or labour. Review substrate requirements, compatible adhesives where relevant, floor height and transition details. The installer needs the product instructions, not only the sales description.

Match the selection to its intended use

Compare appearance using physical samples, then request evidence for the traffic, loads and conditions expected in the project. Water-related claims, emissions, slip behaviour and any fire requirement need separate assessment. Read the warranty and maintenance instructions before ordering. Keep the product code, batch details and spare material for future repairs. This provides a practical basis for selecting LVT without assuming that every product has the same layers, performance or installation requirements.
