SPC Flooring Installation: A Practical Pre-Laying Checklist

Prepare for SPC flooring installation by checking the substrate, product instructions, room layout, movement details and handover records before laying begins.

Before installing SPC flooring, verify that the room, substrate and installation method meet the chosen product’s instructions. A click connection can simplify assembly, but it does not remove the need for preparation. The following checklist helps identify decisions that should be resolved before laying starts.

Confirm the product and instructions

Check the product code, installation manual and supplied batch against the approved order. Identify the attachment system, any attached pad and the accessories needed at transitions. Read instructions for storage and preparation before opening packages. If the supplier’s advice conflicts with a proposed site method, resolve the discrepancy in writing instead of adapting the method informally during installation.

Inspect the substrate and room

Assess the base for stability, cleanliness, flatness and moisture using the required methods. Investigate cracks, loose coverings and contamination that may interfere with preparation. Review door clearances, stairs, appliances and access to services. Existing tiles or another floor covering should remain only if the selected product permits that build-up and all required preparation can be completed.

Plan movement and finishing details

Set out the layout before committing to the first row. Review the required allowances at walls, thresholds, columns and fixed objects. A neat appearance should not be achieved by trapping a floating floor or eliminating prescribed movement space. Confirm underlay compatibility and avoid adding layers solely to improve comfort. Heating systems and intense sunlight also need product-specific review rather than a general claim of dimensional stability.

Check material and keep records

Inspect pieces for visible damage during laying and follow the manufacturer’s joint assembly sequence. Stop when joints do not engage correctly rather than forcing them or concealing a damaged edge. Record the accepted substrate condition, product identity and any approved departures from the standard detail. At handover, provide care instructions and retained spare material. This creates a clear starting point for maintenance and later repairs, while helping distinguish product problems from installation conditions.
